Kathleen Mullen is an Associate Professor in the School of Chemistry & Physics at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Faculty of Science. Her research focuses on supramolecular chemistry and molecular recognition, with applications in molecular devices and sensing. She earned her PhD from the University of New England and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Oxford and the University of Edinburgh before joining QUT as a Lecturer in 2009.
Her research interests include supramolecular chemistry, organic synthesis, molecular recognition, dynamic covalent chemistry, and molecular machines. She investigates mechanically interlocked molecules such as rotaxanes and catenanes, particularly their use in anion sensing, molecular switches, and surface-tethered systems. Her work bridges synthetic organic chemistry with materials science and nanotechnology.
Her recent publications span from 2017 to 2023, appearing in high-impact journals such as Angewandte Chemie, Chemical Science, and Journal of the American Chemical Society. These works reflect a consistent focus on supramolecular architectures, coordination cages, redox-switchable systems, and dynamic covalent synthesis. Trends include the development of stimuli-responsive molecular devices and advanced analytical methods like ion-mobility mass spectrometry for characterizing complex assemblies.

Dr. Mullen supervises research in building metallo-supramolecular cages for sensing and catalytic applications. She has led competitively funded projects, including an ARC Discovery Project.
