Kathleen Issen is a Research Professor at Clarkson University's Coulter School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering. She is also affiliated with the Institute for STEM Education. Her research focuses on solid mechanics and materials, particularly constitutive modeling of heterogeneous/anisotropic materials and instability phenomena in porous materials like sandstone, metal foams, and cancellous bone. She holds a PhD in Theoretical & Applied Mechanics from Northwestern University (2000) and has extensive teaching experience, including courses in statics, strength of materials, and research methodology. Dr. Issen has received numerous awards for teaching and advising, including the NAE Frontiers of Engineering Education (2009) and the Coulter School's Teaching Excellence Award (2002–2010).

Research Interests:
Dr. Issen develops constitutive models to link micro/mesostructure to macrobehavior in porous materials. Her work employs theoretical, experimental, and computational methods to study deformation, bifurcation, and instability. Current projects include characterizing compaction localization in sandstone and metal foams, and investigating strain localization under triaxial stresses. Her findings contribute to geomechanics, biomechanics, and materials engineering.

Collaborates with geomechanics and materials research groups, focusing on experimental rock mechanics and computational modeling of porous media.
