Kathleen Casey is a Professor of History and Director of the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program at Furman University. She holds a PhD in History and a certificate in Gender and Women’s Studies from the University of Rochester (2010). Her career spans roles at institutions including the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Honors College and Virginia Wesleyan University. Casey specializes in American women’s history, gender studies, vaudeville, and material culture, with a focus on race, sexuality, and clothing. Her research has been supported by grants and fellowships from institutions like the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Woodrow Wilson Foundation.
Her scholarly publications include The Prettiest Girl on Stage is a Man: Race and Gender Benders in American Vaudeville (2015) and an upcoming book on purses and women’s empowerment. Her work appears in Gender & History, Frontiers, and Ms. Magazine. Casey actively engages public audiences through lectures at non-profits, museums, and community spaces, emphasizing accessible scholarly communication.
