Kathleen Bliss serves as an Associate Professor in the Agriculture and Veterinary Technology department within Alfred State College's School of Agriculture, where she has taught since fall 2001. Her instructional focus includes veterinary technology fundamentals, parasitology, and animal disease control, earning her the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2015 for her commitment to foundational student education and continuing professional development.
Her academic credentials feature a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Excelsior College (2003-2006) with thesis research on Pit Bull Terrier societal impacts, complemented by veterinary technology and animal science degrees from Medaille College, Purdue University, and Alfred State College.
Dr. Bliss specializes in parasitology applications across diverse species including camelids, small ruminants, and equines, with significant contributions to parasite identification and control methodologies. Her research extends to poultry health through Cornell Cooperative Extension collaborations, emphasizing practical solutions for agricultural communities while critically examining ethical dimensions of animal breeding practices.
Professional recognition includes the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching (2015), UUP Retraining Fellowship (2006), and UUP Professional Development Award (2005).
As advisor for the NYSAVT Student Chapter and Allegany County 4H Horse program, she mentors students through hands-on agricultural experiences. Her grant acquisitions—including funding for surgical lab equipment and canine anatomy models—demonstrate strategic resource development for enhanced veterinary education. Community engagement spans science fair judging, FFA presentations, and youth agricultural coaching.
Dr. Bliss co-leads the "Opt to Adopt" Leadership Suite initiative promoting shelter adoptions and spay/neuter awareness. She actively represents Alfred State at NYS Farm Show, Empire Farm Days, and Cornell Veterinary School events while maintaining operational involvement in her northern Allegany County farm raising Morgan horses and producing maple syrup.
