Kathleen A. Becker is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences within the College of Medicine at the University of New England. Her research investigates novel mechanisms regulating bone formation and the dysregulation of these pathways in conditions like osteoporosis and fracture risk. Specifically, her laboratory focuses on cell signaling proteins in osteoblasts and the impact of peripheral nerve injury on bone metabolism. The NIH's National Institute of General Medical Sciences primarily funds her research program, with additional support from the University of New England's Center for Cell Signaling.
The Becker laboratory maintains a collaborative environment involving undergraduate students, medical students, and graduate students from the Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Engineering. Current research employs diverse approaches including molecular biology techniques, advanced imaging methods like SHIELD-fDISCO, and animal models to understand fundamental bone biology. Research findings contribute to identifying therapeutic targets for osteoporosis treatment and fracture prevention.
