Kathie Shiba is a Professor of Psychology and Assistant Dean for Faculty Development at Maryville College, where she has been a faculty member since 1994. She is based in the Division of Behavioral Sciences and works out of the Sutton Science Center. Her academic and professional journey began in California, and she has since built a robust career in teaching, research, and student mentorship at MC.
Her educational background includes a B.A. from California State University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Riverside.
Kathie Shiba's research and teaching focus on critical social and psychological issues, including the intersectionality of women’s experiences, prejudice based on race, national origin, gender, and sexual identity, and the development of resilience and coping strategies in educational settings. She leads the Positive Psychology Laboratory, where her team investigates how individuals respond positively to systemic and interpersonal challenges on college campuses. Her interdisciplinary approach is reflected in courses such as The Intersectionality of Women’s Experiences, Road to Justice (a civil rights tour), and Our Rights and Responsibilities as US Citizens.
She has mentored numerous students who have pursued impactful careers in medicine, education, the arts, counseling, and social justice leadership. Her commitment to experiential learning is evident in her student-involved trips to countries such as Japan, Brazil, Mexico, and Vietnam, as well as domestic destinations like Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons.
