Katherine Williams is a Research Fellow in Popular Music Songwriting at the Department of Media, Humanities and the Arts, University of Huddersfield, and a member of the Centre for Research in Music and its Technologies. Her work focuses on popular music songwriting, jazz studies, gender in music, and collaborative processes. She leads the SC21 project (2023–2026), exploring Songwriting Camps in the 21st Century, which examines industry dynamics and creative collaboration.
Her research interests include the cultural impact of jazz, gender representation in songwriting, and the evolution of the American Songbook. Recent publications analyze singer-songwriter expression, collaborative practices in music production, and women’s contributions to songwriting history. She actively contributes to peer-reviewed journals like Popular Music and Society and Jazz Research Journal.
Williams has held editorial roles and reviewed for events such as the International Association for the Study of Popular Music. She serves as an external examiner for PhD and BA programs in music, emphasizing academic rigor and industry relevance. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in fostering inclusive cultural participation.
