Dr. Katherine Pukinskis is an Assistant Professor of Music and Chair of the Contemporary Creative Practice Division at Carnegie Mellon University's School of Music. Her work bridges composition, scholarship, and activism, focusing on storytelling through music and cultural identity. She holds a PhD in Composition (Ethnomusicology focus) from the University of Chicago, and MM and BFA degrees in Composition from Carnegie Mellon University.
Her research explores cultural identity, diaspora, and traditional music, with a focus on Latvian choral music and 20th-century American Art Song. She has presented at international conferences such as the College Music Society’s International Conference and co-edited Baltic Musics Beyond the Post Soviet (2024). Her compositions have been premiered by groups like eighth blackbird, Spektral Quartet, and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, with commissions from institutions including the San Antonio Symphony and Akropolis Reed Quintet.
Prior to Carnegie Mellon, Pukinskis taught at Harvard University, Amherst College, and the Longy School of Music. Her creative and scholarly work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and the dynamic role of music in cultural narratives.
