Dr. Katherine New is a Lecturer in Russian at the University of Oxford, holding a stipendiary position at Oriel College. Her research focuses on 18th-21st century Russian drama and theatre, with a particular emphasis on ecofeminist agendas, political theatre, and intertextual studies. She holds degrees from Oxford (MA, MSt, DPhil) and has taught Russian language and literature at both college and faculty levels since 2017. Her interdisciplinary work bridges literary analysis with performance studies, examining how Russian drama interacts with European traditions. Recent publications include studies on Chekhov’s spatial dynamics, Katenin’s political plays, and the reception of classical myths in Russian literature.
Her teaching spans Russian poetry, prose, and drama, including specialized courses on Gogol, Bulgakov, and Russian Symbolism. She has held roles such as Graduate Teaching Assistant at New College and contributed to the CatCor research project. Dr. New’s research also explores philosophical thought, environmental humanities, and translation theory, with a focus on diachronic translation methodologies. She has presented at numerous international conferences, including the International Medieval Congress and the Viking Society for Northern Research.
Her work is supported by an AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership grant. Dr. New is an active member of professional organizations like the Modern Languages Association and the International Association for Comparative Mythology.
