Katherine Magnuson is a Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s School of Social Work and serves as Director of the Institute for Research on Poverty. Her research bridges socioeconomic disparities and early childhood development, focusing on how parental and policy-level interventions can mitigate poverty’s impacts.
- Ph.D. in Human Development and Social Policy, Northwestern University (2002)
- B.A. in History and Political Science, Brown University (1995)
Her work examines how socioeconomic status (SES) disparities affect children’s development and evaluates the efficacy of early childhood education programs and cash transfer policies. She investigates the interplay between parental employment, income, education, and welfare policies in shaping child outcomes.
Recent publications highlight experimental analyses of unconditional cash transfers in the U.S., including impacts on maternal health, child brain activity, family investments, and child care markets. These studies emphasize poverty reduction, policy evaluation, and long-term developmental outcomes.
