Katherine E. HOFFMAN

Katherine E. HOFFMAN is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Northwestern University (Evanston, IL, USA). She held a visiting position at the Collegium de Lyon from September 15, 2016, to July 15, 2017, conducting research on 'Regimes of care: Islamic guardianship and the transnational adoption of Muslim orphans.' Her work bridges legal, linguistic, and sociocultural anthropology, with a focus on how Islamic legal frameworks intersect with global child welfare practices.

Her research interests include the anthropology of law, transnational migration, and the sociopolitical dimensions of guardianship systems. During her stay in Lyon, she explored how Islamic principles shape adoption practices across borders, particularly in contexts of displacement and diaspora communities.
