Katherine Brucher is a Professor at DePaul University's School of Music, serving as Director of the BA in Music Program and World Music Coordinator with active research and performance engagements.
Her academic credentials include:
- BA in Music and English Literature from Brown University
- PhD in Musicology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
Her research centers on Portuguese music and diaspora communities, rural wind band traditions, and cultural identity through music, particularly examining connections between Portuguese immigrant communities and their homelands. Current projects include an ethnographic book on Portuguese wind bands and a study of Henry Ford's 1920s folk music/dance sponsorship, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to migration studies and community music practices.
Brucher conducts fieldwork across Portugal and the United States, presenting findings at premier conferences including the Society for Ethnomusicology and International Council for Traditional Music. As a performer, she plays oboe and saxophone while actively participating in Javanese gamelan ensembles with Friends of the Gamelan.
