Katherine Baldock is an ecologist currently serving as an Associate Professor in Ecology at Northumbria University (since 2023), previously holding the position of Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at the same institution from 2019-2023. Her academic career includes a NERC Knowledge Exchange Fellowship at the University of Bristol (2015-2019) and postdoctoral research there (2011-2015). She has applied her expertise in insect pollinators and ecological systems to various research projects.
- 2023 - Present: Associate Professor in Ecology, Northumbria University
- 2019-2023: Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Ecology, Northumbria University
- 2015-2019: NERC Knowledge Exchange Fellow, University of Bristol
- 2011-2015: Postdoctoral Research Associate, University of Bristol
Katherine's research focuses on understanding how human activities impact biodiversity, ecological communities, and ecosystem services. Her work encompasses various landscapes including urban, agricultural, and natural ecosystems across both tropical and temperate environments. She has supervised numerous PhD students including Francesca Martelli on urban pollinator community drivers, Beatrice Dale on urban tree floral resources for pollinators, and Federica Paradiso on honeybee-wild pollinator coexistence strategies.
Her publication record demonstrates extensive work on pollinator conservation, including studies on urban pollination networks, nectar supply dynamics in residential gardens, savanna ecosystem interactions, and field boundary management for bee population stability. She has also contributed to knowledge exchange, working with policymakers and practitioners to implement evidence-based conservation strategies.
Katherine's academic contributions span from 2007 to the present, with recent work examining honeybee dominance patterns, urban biodiversity monitoring approaches, and plant functional traits affecting pollination networks. She has been actively involved in research collaborations across UK institutions and internationally, particularly in Kenyan savannah habitats.
