Katherine Baicker is the 15th Provost of the University of Chicago and the Emmett Dedmon Distinguished Service Professor at the Harris School of Public Policy. She oversees academic programs, research, and the university budget. Previously, she served as Dean of the Harris School for five years and held the C. Boyden Gray Professorship at Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Her research focuses on the economic analysis of healthcare policy, particularly the effectiveness of public and private health insurance. Notable work includes the Oregon Health Insurance Experiment, a randomized evaluation of Medicaid’s impact. She has published in top journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Science, and Health Affairs.
Baicker holds leadership roles as a director of Eli Lilly, a Mayo Clinic trustee, and a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). She has served on key committees, including the President’s Council of Economic Advisers (2005–2007) and the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission. Her education includes a B.A. in economics from Yale and a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard.
