Leibniz Institute for Media Research | Hans-Bredow-Institutمعرفی
Katharina Mosene is a political scientist working as a research associate at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG), where she serves as co-project coordinator of the "Human in the Loop" research project. She also holds a position at the Leibniz Institute for Media Research │ Hans Bredow Institute, where she is responsible for strategic research and event collaborations and serves as the institute's equal opportunities officer. As a founding member of netzforma* eV – Association for Feminist Internet Politics, she actively contributes to feminist internet politics and digital rights advocacy.
Mosene's research focuses on integrating intersectional feminist approaches into internet governance, identifying biases in artificial intelligence, and addressing ethical issues surrounding algorithms in business and society. She investigates approaches to combating digital violence, hate speech, and antifeminism, with the goal of enabling equal opportunities in digital spaces. Her work spans critical analysis of AI systems, feminist perspectives on technology, and strategies for creating more inclusive digital environments. She examines how algorithmic systems reproduce societal inequalities and how human oversight can create more equitable technological solutions.
Her extensive publication record reveals consistent themes across her work: the gendered impacts of AI, the importance of human oversight in algorithmic decision-making, and feminist alternatives to current technology development practices. Mosene's research demonstrates how digital platforms often amplify existing societal biases, particularly against women and marginalized groups, while also exploring practical interventions to create more inclusive digital spaces. Her work connects theoretical feminist frameworks with practical policy recommendations for technology governance.
Mosene regularly contributes to policy discussions and public discourse through speaking engagements, workshops, and media appearances. She has participated in numerous international conferences and events focused on feminist technology design, digital violence prevention, and inclusive internet governance. Her collaborative work spans multiple institutions and cultural contexts, particularly addressing gender issues in technology sectors across different regions including Europe, Latin America, and Africa.
As part of the AI & Society Lab at HIIG, Mosene contributes to interdisciplinary research examining the societal implications of artificial intelligence. She collaborates with researchers from diverse fields to develop frameworks for ethical AI development and implementation, with particular attention to how technology affects gender equality and social justice. Her work on the "Human in the Loop" project specifically investigates how human involvement can improve automated decision-making systems, particularly in high-stakes contexts like financial services.
