Katharina Gugerell

Dr. Katharina Gugerell is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Landscape Planning, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna (BOKU). She holds a Venia Docendi in Landscape Planning and has served as Visiting Professor at institutions like Gdansk University of Technology and the University of Johannesburg. Her research bridges sustainable land use policy, natural resource governance, and transdisciplinary sustainability transitions.

Her academic journey includes a PhD in Landscape Planning (2008–2012) and an MSc in Landscape Planning (2007). She has led major projects like BIOSS (Austrian Academy of Sciences) and LAND4CLIMATE (European Commission), focusing on climate-resilient land use and science-society collaboration in vulnerable landscapes.

Her recent publications analyze mineral resource governance (2023 Ambio), serious games for sustainability (2023 GAIA), and climate policy frameworks (2025 Journal of Environmental Policy & Planning). These works emphasize institutional bricolage, knowledge integration, and participatory governance.

She has supervised numerous Master’s theses on topics like climate-resilient land use, human-elephant conflict, and soil health in Pannonian agriculture.
