Dr Kate Wallis is a Lecturer in the Department of English and Creative Writing at the University of Exeter. Her research focuses on contemporary African literature, material cultures of the book, and global literary networks, with regional emphasis on Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Somaliland, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. She also co-founded Africa In Words and served as a director for Kigali-based Huza Press, contributing to literary development initiatives across Africa.
Her research interests include:
- Contemporary African literature and publishing
- Global literary networks and postcolonial studies
- Black British writing and creative arts
- Migration and displacement studies (via Routes @Exeter)
- Literary festivals, independent publishing, and digital cultures
Dr Wallis supervises PhD and Master’s students in World and Postcolonial Literatures and Publishing Studies. She previously worked as Head of Humanities at Palgrave Macmillan and as an Editor at Kwani Trust in Kenya, curating major festivals like Africa Writes–Bristol and Africa Writes–Exeter. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to education, gender equality, and sustainable cities.
