Professor Kate Phylaktis is a leading academic in international finance and director of the Emerging Markets Group (EMG) at Bayes Business School, City, University of London. She holds a PhD in Banking and Finance from City University London and has extensive experience in research, policy advising, and consulting for institutions such as the IMF, World Bank, and governments in Cyprus and Greece.
Her research focuses on emerging markets finance, foreign exchange markets, and capital market integration. She has authored over 45 journal articles and three seminal books, including The Banking System of Cyprus: Past, Present and Future. Her work has been recognized with awards such as the Cass Business School Research Prize (2005) and top paper accolades at international conferences.
As EMG Director, she has organized conferences and workshops fostering collaboration between academics, policymakers, and industry professionals. She has served on editorial boards for journals like Journal of International Money and Finance and Emerging Markets Review, and has advised on financial policies for institutions like the Hellenic Capital Markets Commission.
Her advisory roles include mentoring over a dozen PhD students in topics ranging from sovereign debt in Sub-Saharan Africa to microstructure of forex markets. Her recent research explores global liquidity’s impact on real estate markets and foreign ownership dynamics in emerging economies.
