Kate Crawford

Kate Crawford is a Research Professor at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School and a Senior Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research New York. She holds the inaugural Visiting Chair for AI and Justice at École Normale Supérieure in Paris. Her work bridges AI ethics, environmental impact, and social implications, with interdisciplinary collaborations in art and science.

Crawford’s research appears in journals like Nature and Science, and her book Atlas of AI critiques AI’s material and political dimensions, winning global acclaim. Her art projects, including Anatomy of an AI System and Calculating Empires, explore technology’s historical and ecological consequences, displayed in major museums worldwide.

She advises policymakers globally, including the White House and European Parliament, and co-founded FATE (Fairness, Accountability, Transparency, and Ethics in AI) and the AI Now Institute. Awards include the Ayrton Prize and multiple museum acquisitions of her visual works.
