Dr. Katayoun Shafiee is an Associate Professor in the History of the Middle East at the University of Warwick's Faculty of Arts, Department of History. She holds a PhD from New York University (NYU) and has held fellowships at institutions including University College London and the National University of Singapore. Her research focuses on infrastructural history, energy politics, and the intersection of science/technology studies with Middle Eastern history.

Research interests include oil industrialization, dam construction, and the socio-technical frameworks shaping Middle Eastern development. Her book Machineries of Oil: An Infrastructural History of BP in Iran (MIT Press, 2018) redefines Middle Eastern political analysis through oil industry studies. Current projects examine Iran's water infrastructure and economic governance.
Grants include British Academy/Leverhulme Trust funding (2021-22) and prior support from the National Science Foundation and SSRC. She advises doctoral students exploring energy politics, post-colonial theory, and infrastructural transformation.
