Katarzyna Ruchel-Stockmans is a Research Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), affiliated with the Artistic Research Centre of Expertise on Gender, Diversity and Intersectionality within the School of History, Archeology, Arts, Philosophy and Ethics. Her work focuses on photography, Cold War studies, contemporary art, and the intersection of art with social movements and politics. She leads multiple research projects, including Photography & Dissent: Image Circulations In and Out of Public Discourse and collaborations with institutions like NOVA University (Lisbon).
Her research interests include community-based photographic archives, Cold War histories in Eastern Europe, and the role of art in resistance and memory. Notable publications explore topics like vernacular modernisms, photographic archives as sites of resistance, and eco-art practices. She has received the Seed Funding for research collaboration with EUTOPIA partners in 2023.
Ruchel-Stockmans has supervised five doctoral theses and is actively involved in curating exhibitions, hosting academic events, and participating in international research networks. She contributes to peer-reviewed journals like ARTMargins Online and Život umjetnosti, and her work often bridges academic research with public engagement through exhibitions and workshops.
