Kat Ross is a Research Fellow at Curtin University's Curtin Research Institute, part of the School of Elec Eng, Comp and Math Sci and Faculty of Science and Engineering. She leads the #IncludeHer campaign to diversify science education curricula and studies galaxy evolution using the Murchison Widefield Array. Ross completed her PhD on radio spectral variability at Curtin and was awarded the Exxon Mobil Student Scientist of the Year (2022).
Education: PhD in Astrophysics, Curtin University ("Looking Through Rainbow Coloured Glasses: Radio Spectral Variability and its Physical Origins").
Research Interests: Radio astronomy focuses include spectral variability of radio sources and large-scale surveys like GLEAM-X. Advocacy work addresses gender representation in STEM curricula, with a 2023 study revealing severe underrepresentation of female scientists in Australian high school courses. Ross also emphasizes creating inclusive environments for LGBTQIA+ and neurodiverse individuals in STEM.
Labs/Teams: Member of the Curtin Institute of Radio Astronomy (CIRA) and core contributor to the GLEAM-X survey team. Active in science communication and policy advocacy through #IncludeHer, seeking curriculum reforms to include diverse scientist role models.
