Kasturi R. Varadarajan is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at The University of Iowa, where he has been actively teaching and conducting research for many years. His academic home is within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
His research lies primarily in theoretical computer science, with a deep focus on computational geometry, approximation algorithms for geometric optimization problems, and the computability of equilibria in games and economic models. He has expressed particular interest in algorithmic techniques such as divide-and-conquer, dynamic programming, and probabilistic methods. His work is regularly presented at top-tier conferences including SoCG, SODA, STOC, and FOCS, indicating sustained scholarly impact in the theory community.
Prof. Varadarajan has taught a comprehensive range of courses, including Design and Analysis of Algorithms, Data Structures, Computational Geometry, Algorithmic Excursions, Computing Equilibria in Markets and Games, Limitations of Computation, and Theory of Computation. His teaching spans both undergraduate and graduate levels, with documented offerings from 2005 through 2020, demonstrating a long and consistent commitment to education.
He has advised several PhD students to completion, including Erik Krohn, Matt Gibson, Sayan Bandyapadhyay, and Tanmay Inamdar, among others. He encourages prospective students to engage with the Algorithms Reading Group and to build foundational knowledge in approximation algorithms and probabilistic methods. Although he currently has no PhD students, he remains open to advising those with the appropriate background.
Throughout his career, Prof. Varadarajan has maintained a strong presence in the academic community through teaching, mentoring, and research.
