Kary Främling is an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management at Aalto University. He holds a Doctoral degree in Engineering and Technology from Institut national des sciences appliquées de Lyon (20 May 1997) and a Master's degree in Engineering and Technology from Helsinki University of Technology (15 October 1990). He also serves as a Professor at Umeå University since November 2017.
His research focuses on Internet of Things (IoT), intelligent systems, explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), reinforcement learning, and building information modeling. Key areas include smart city technologies, security architectures for IoT products, and machine learning applications in energy utilization. He has contributed to over 176 publications and 25 research projects, including EU-funded initiatives like FINEST TW and bIoTope.
His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in innovation and infrastructure. Notable awards include the 2002 Emerald Literati Club Highly Commended Award.
Främling has led projects on security frameworks for IoT lifecycle management, decision support systems using XAI, and smart parking solutions. He actively participates in academic activities, including conference organization, thesis supervision, and keynote lectures.
