Karsten Weicker

Karsten Weicker is a Professor of Practical Computer Science at the Faculty of Computer Science and Media, Leipzig University of Applied Sciences (HTWK Leipzig). He has been serving in this position since 2004, bringing expertise in algorithms and computational methods to the institution.

Professor Weicker's research focuses on algorithmics for application problems and evolutionary heuristics. He has developed multimedia learning units for evolutionary algorithms that visualize search dynamics through carefully designed experiments and data visualization techniques. His research bridges theoretical computer science with practical applications across various domains.

Professor Weicker teaches multiple core computer science courses including Algorithms and Data Structures, Software Engineering, Software Project, Project Management Internship, Evolutionary Algorithms, Algorithm Engineering, and IT Security across both bachelor's and master's programs.

He actively supervises bachelor's and master's theses, requiring students to follow specific guidelines outlined in his "Academic Work and Writing in Computer Science" document. Thesis topics typically focus on algorithm development for specific application problems or evolutionary computation approaches.

Professor Weicker completed his Promotion (doctoral thesis) in 2003 on "Evolutionary Algorithms and Dynamic Optimization Problems" at the University of Stuttgart, where he previously worked as a Research Associate in the Department of Formal Concepts at the Institute of Computer Science. Before that, he was a Research Assistant at the Chair of Computer Architecture at the University of Tübingen.

His educational background includes a Diploma in Computer Science and M.Sc. in Computer Science (both 1997), with studies at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst (1995-1997) and the University of Stuttgart (1990-1997) where he also minored in Mathematics.
