Prof. Dr.-Ing. Karsten Stahl holds the Chair of Machine Elements at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) School of Engineering and Design since 2011 and serves as Director of the Gear Research Center (FZG). He leads research on mechanical drive components including gears, synchronizers, clutches, bearings, and electromechanical systems, focusing on load capacity, efficiency, vibration, EHD tribocontacts, and simulation tools.
- Research: Mechanical drive systems, tribology, gear dynamics, alternative materials
- Teaching: Machine elements fundamentals, vehicle drivelines, advanced gear design
- Leadership: DFG Review Board speaker, ISO/DIN gear standardization committees
His publications span computational modeling, tribological coatings, fatigue analysis, and automotive transmission systems. Key themes include gearbox efficiency optimization, sensor-integrated components, and robotic drive systems.
- Awards: TUM Certificate of Honor for Excellent Teaching (2021)
- 8x Golden Apprenticeship (B.Sc. Mech. Eng., 2015-2023)
- 2x Golden Apprenticeship (M.Sc. Mech. Eng., 2020-2021)
- VDI Ring of Honor (2005)
- FAG Kugelfischer Prize (1992)
Prof. Stahl advises student projects and contributes to international standardization. His work bridges academic research with industrial applications through collaborations with automotive manufacturers and research institutions.
