Karsten Gronert is Professor of Optometry and Vision Science at the School of Optometry, University of California, Berkeley, where he leads research on lipid mediator networks in ocular immune responses and retinal neurodegeneration from his laboratory at 594 Minor Hall.
Research Interests: The Gronert Lab pioneers studies on Lipid Mediators as critical regulators of tissue homeostasis and immune responses, with specialized focus on Neurodegeneration in glaucoma. Using LC/MS/MS-based lipidomics and bioinformatics, the lab discovered retinal astrocytes release lipoxins to protect ganglion cells—a circuit impaired in glaucoma but rescuable via therapeutic amplification. Current work defines molecular mechanisms of lipid mediator dysregulation and develops novel treatments for retinal diseases.
Scientific Awards: No personal awards are documented in the source material.
Advising and Grants: The lab mentors graduate students evidenced by recent student achievements including Shruthi's Shaffer Grant (Glaucoma Research Foundation, Feb 2025) and Shubham's ISER travel award (Oct 2024). Dr. Gronert co-instructs Optometry 226A (Systemic Pharmacology) and 226B (Ocular Pharmacology), covering drug mechanisms for systemic/ocular conditions.
Laboratory: The Gronert Lab operates within Berkeley's Vision Science Program and Clinical Research Center, employing gene-to-cell-level analysis of lipid networks. Recent activities include a Molecular Neurodegeneration publication (Nov 2024) and rotational student recruitment, with ongoing pre-clinical work targeting glaucomatous neurodegeneration.
