Prof. Karsten Danzmann is a Professor and Director of the Institute for Gravitational Physics at Leibniz University Hanover, and a Director of the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute). Born in 1955, he earned his physics diploma and doctorate from the University of Hanover (1980). His career includes roles at Stanford University (visiting scientist and assistant professor) and the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics. Danzmann is renowned for his pivotal role in the discovery of gravitational waves via the LIGO collaboration, for which he received major awards in 2016.
Research Focus: Danzmann specializes in gravitational wave detection, quantum optics, and advanced detector systems. His work enabled the historic 2015 observation of gravitational waves from merging black holes, opening gravitational-wave astronomy.
Awards:
- Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics (2016)
- Gruber Cosmology Prize (2016)
- Lower Saxony State Prize (2016)
Advising & Labs: Leads the Institute for Gravitational Physics and collaborates with the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics, instrumental in LIGO's detector technology.
