Karolina Rudnicka is a Professor at the Department of Immunology and Infectious Biology within the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection at the University of Lodz. She serves as a member of the University Council (2025-2028) and acts as the Representative of the Dean for innovation and implementation. Her academic career spans over 16 years at the same institution, progressing from Assistant (2008-2009) to Assistant Professor (2010-2023), and finally to Professor in 2024.
Karolina earned her PhD in biological sciences specializing in microbiology in 2014 after graduating from the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection. She has developed extensive expertise through international experiences at institutions including the University of Zagreb (2024), Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon (2023), University of Groningen (2022), Sandoz in Ljubljana (2014), Biotech Pharmacon in Tromsø (2008), and the National University of Ireland (2007).
Her research focuses on the functionality and effectiveness of bioactive substances with pro-regenerative, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory properties. She conducts both in vitro and in vivo studies assessing the cytocompatibility, safety, and functionality of biomaterials and composites that support repair processes in bone and nervous tissue. Additional research interests include barrier function, immune mechanisms, and changes in microbiome composition influenced by preparations and food ingredients. She actively collaborates with research institutions and entrepreneurs in developing and validating tests for microbiological and veterinary diagnostics.
Karolina has extensive experience managing interdisciplinary research teams and implementation collaborations, having led projects funded by the Foundation for Polish Science, National Centre for Research and Development, National Science Centre, and Ministry of Science and Higher Education. She is a strong advocate for building bridges between science and industry practice, particularly through engaging students and doctoral candidates in research projects.
From 2020-2024, she served as the university's tutoring coordinator and coordinator of the 'Masters of Teaching' project, which led to the development of the first academic tutoring model at the University of Lodz and the establishment of the University of Lodz Tutors Association. She has supervised thesis students in Microbiology, Biotechnology, and Forensic Biology, and served as assistant supervisor for two doctoral dissertations. She also participates in the Teaching Committee for the Microbiology major, proposing courses that meet market and societal needs.
