Karolina Östbring is a Senior Lecturer at the Division of Food and Pharma at Lund University. She is affiliated with the LTH Profile Area: Aerosols and serves as a researcher in the Lund University Pre Pilot Plant (LUPPP) initiative. Her email is karolina.ostbring@ple.lth.se, and her research focuses on sustainable food systems, bioprocess technology, and circular economy applications in agriculture. She leads projects such as the improvement of rapeseed cake quality and the valorization of plant-based residues like okara from soy and oat.
Her expertise aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in addressing food security and sustainable production. Key research areas include protein utilization from rapeseed and hempseed, high-pressure processing technologies, and microbial inactivation in food systems. She collaborates on interdisciplinary projects involving food engineering, biotechnology, and environmental sustainability.
Notable projects include the development of formaldehyde-free adhesives from rapeseed and the exploration of oyster mushrooms for rapeseed residue upcycling. Her work emphasizes reducing food waste and enhancing resource efficiency through innovative processing techniques.
She supervises PhD students in areas like membrane systems for antinutrient reduction and cross-processing fish co-products with plant materials. Her grants include funding from Swedish Government Agencies for Innovation Systems and agricultural producer organizations.
Dr. Östbring is actively involved in academic activities, including organizing workshops on sustainable food systems and serving on doctoral examining committees. She contributes to the LUPPP infrastructure, supporting pilot-scale research in food and pharmaceutical technologies.
