Karlene A. Hoo serves as a Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Texas Tech University's College of Engineering. Prior to academia, she worked as a chemical engineer at Exxon-Mobil and DuPont, later launching her academic career at the University of South Carolina before joining Texas Tech University. She has held significant administrative roles including Associate Dean of Research, Associate Vice President for Research, and co-director of an industrial consortium, alongside a three-year tenure as Program Director at the National Science Foundation Engineering Directorate.
Education:
- Ph.D. Chemical Engineering, University of Notre Dame
- M.S. Chemical Engineering, University of Notre Dame
- B.S. Chemical Engineering, University of Pennsylvania
Her research centers on optimization of large scale dynamic systems, multivariate statistical analyses, and feedback control system synthesis—critical methodologies for industrial process efficiency and stability. These interdisciplinary interests bridge chemical engineering, control theory, and data-driven modeling to solve complex system dynamics challenges.
Scientific Awards:
- National Science Foundation CAREER award
Dr. Hoo has directed eleven Ph.D. students and maintains a sustained record of research grants and scholarly productivity exceeding 100 publications, presentations, and book chapters. Her professional leadership spans key societies including AIChE, IEEE Control System Society, and Society of Women Engineers, reflecting deep engagement in both technical and diversity-focused academic communities.
