Karl Zelik is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Vanderbilt University's School of Engineering. His research focuses on biomechanics, prosthetics, exoskeletons, and wearable technology to enhance mobility and reduce musculoskeletal injury risks. He holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan, and M.S. and B.S. degrees in Biomedical Engineering from Washington University.
His work spans the design and evaluation of assistive devices like ankle exoskeletons for runners, sensor-instrumented back exosuits for laborers, and prosthetic feet with articulating toe joints. He emphasizes translating engineering solutions into real-world applications, such as improving rehabilitation outcomes for amputees and occupational workers.
Zelik's research also explores wearable sensors for remote musculoskeletal monitoring, injury risk prediction, and ergonomic assessment tools for exosuit effectiveness. His interdisciplinary approach bridges mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, and clinical rehabilitation, addressing both fundamental biomechanical principles and practical device implementation.
