معرفی
Karl L Magleby, Ph.D., is a Professor and Chair of the Physiology and Biophysics department. His research focuses on ion channel mechanisms, particularly the selectivity and conductance of BK channels, their gating dynamics, and the role of ion channels in synaptic plasticity. He holds a BS from the University of Utah (1966) and a PhD from the University of Washington (1971), followed by postdoctoral training at the latter institution.
His research interests include the molecular mechanisms underlying ion channel function, the interplay between calcium binding and voltage activation in BK channels, and the pathophysiological implications of channel mutations. Recent work has explored allosteric modulators' effects on BK channel activity and the biophysical properties of channelopathies caused by genetic variants like KCNMA1 G375R.
Publications since 2020 highlight advancements in understanding BK channel activation mechanisms, including voltage-sensor coupling, αB helix dynamics, and the structural basis for calcium activation. Earlier studies (2015–2019) addressed synaptic plasticity, mechanosensitive channels, and gating ring function. Despite his extensive output, no scientific awards are explicitly mentioned in the text.
His work integrates electrophysiological, biochemical, and structural approaches to dissect ion channel function. While no student advisees or grants are listed, his role as department chair suggests leadership in academic and research administration.
