Karl Johnson is an Associate Professor and Assistant Department Head in the Department of Social Work at Northern Michigan University. He holds a Ph.D. and B.A. in Social Welfare and Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research focuses on social policy comparisons, poverty reduction strategies, and social work pedagogy, with a particular emphasis on cross-national perspectives and social investment theories. He has held academic positions in both the U.S. and China, including a five-year tenure at Beijing Normal University.
Johnson’s teaching spans macro-level social work courses such as Social Welfare Policy, Global Approaches to Social Welfare, and Research Methods, with cross-listed courses in sociology and political science. He has led a Russell Sage Foundation grant exploring the impact of the pandemic on Great Lakes nonprofits and collaborated on projects addressing social class in social work education.
His research interests include the consequences of poverty, inequality’s impact on well-being, and participatory democratic theory. He has published in journals like Social Work and Social Sciences Review and International Journal of Human Resource Management, focusing on topics ranging from neoliberal healthcare systems to pension policy in China.
Johnson’s academic contributions also extend to curriculum development, emphasizing diversity and social justice in BSW programs. His work bridges practical social policy analysis with rigorous academic inquiry, often incorporating comparative international frameworks.
