Karl Butler is a Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of New Brunswick (Fredericton campus). His research focuses on geophysical methods for engineering, environmental, and exploration applications, particularly in groundwater resources, seismoelectric phenomena, and coastal marine sedimentology. He holds a PhD in Earth Sciences and has conducted extensive fieldwork involving electrical, seismic, and geophysical well logging techniques.
Research Interests:
- Rock physics and geophysical method development
- Seismoelectric phenomena and instrumentation
- Groundwater monitoring and nitrate infiltration
- Coastal aquifer dynamics
Recent work emphasizes dam seepage surveillance, ice-sheet characterization, and self-potential monitoring for aquifer transmissivity estimation. His projects often integrate field experiments with numerical modeling to validate theoretical predictions.
Key Projects:
- Development of seismoelectric/electroseismic methods
- Seawater intrusion studies in New Brunswick aquifers
- Seismic amplification assessments in urban settings
Lab/Team: Active in UNB's geophysical instrumentation group, collaborating on projects involving specialized equipment for resistivity and induced polarization measurements in rock cores.
