Karina O'Leary is the Interprofessional Conjoint Fellow at the STARS Education and Research Alliance, affiliated with The University of Queensland's School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. As a physiotherapist with extensive clinical and academic experience, her primary roles include advancing interprofessional education, designing work-integrated learning programs, and improving healthcare team collaboration. She is currently completing a PhD (commenced 2021) using experience-based co-design to enhance interprofessional practice in hospital settings.
Qualifications include a PhD candidate (UQ), Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (2009), Master of Physiotherapy (2005), and BSc (Honours) Physiotherapy (1997).
Her research focuses on three core areas: 1) developing interprofessional competencies for health professional students, 2) upskilling educators in interprofessional teaching methods, and 3) creating innovative frameworks for interdisciplinary healthcare teams. Notable work includes the HAPPi Kneecaps trial investigating foot orthoses for patellofemoral pain and pioneering the use of senior students as standardized patients in medical education.
She received the 2022 Health and Behavioural Sciences Faculty Excellence Award for Clinical Education. Her work spans biomechanics, clinical trial design, and educational pedagogy with over 25 years of combined clinical and academic experience.
Supervision availability: Open to HDR students focusing on interprofessional education, healthcare team dynamics, or clinical education innovation. Collaborates with Metro North Hospital and Health Service through grant-funded projects.
