Karina Nilsson is an Associate Professor in Sociology at the Department of Sociology, Umeå University, affiliated with the Faculty of Social Sciences. She holds a Docent qualification and is a domain specialist for register data at the Swedish National Data Service (SND). Her research focuses on social inequalities over the life course, particularly childhood characteristics, health, educational achievement, and family formation dynamics. She actively contributes to interdisciplinary collaborations using Swedish register data.
Nilsson is part of the Umeå SIMSAM Lab steering group and the Research Data Group at Umeå University, emphasizing longitudinal studies on lifelong health and welfare. Her work explores topics such as teenage parenthood trajectories, the impact of mental health on educational outcomes, and socioeconomic disparities in health and education. She has published in journals like International Journal of Epidemiology, Scandinavian Journal of Public Health, and BMC Public Health.
Her research includes studies on regional inequalities in reproductive health, the relationship between work and family preferences, and the long-term effects of childhood health on schooling. She leads projects like 'Life course consequences of teenage parenthood' and 'Adolescent mental health in relation to macroeconomic factors.'
Nilsson’s expertise extends to register-based data methodologies, and she collaborates with institutions like the Swedish National Data Service. She has authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles, focusing on societal structures influencing health, education, and family dynamics across the life course.
