Karin Wårdell is a Professor of Medical Technology and research leader of the Neurotechnology Group at Linköping University's Department of Medical Technology. She has held this position since 2002, following her doctoral (1994) and associate professor (1997) appointments in biomedical instrument technology.
Her research spans neurotechnology and biomedical instrumentation, with focus areas including:
- Neuronavigation and imaging methods
- Biomedical optics and optical navigation
- Computational modeling of brain microcirculation
- Deep brain stimulation (DBS) systems
- Translational research for neurosurgery and neurointensive care
Her publications emphasize multimodal approaches combining MRI, optical techniques, and hemodynamic monitoring to advance brain tumor surgery and neurocritical care. Recent work demonstrates strong trends in intraoperative diagnostics and cerebral blood flow quantification.
Major scientific recognition includes the Otto Schmidt Award from IFMBE. She is a member of IAMBE and EAMBES.
She leads several major projects funded by:
- The Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF)
- Swedish Research Council (VR)
- Swedish Childhood Cancer Foundation
- ALF Region Östergötland
- LiU Cancer
She directs the Neurotechnology Group, collaborating nationally/internationally with clinical researchers and supervising doctoral candidates including Elisabeth Klint and Stina Mauritzon.
