Karin Olsen is an Assistant Professor in Older English Language and Literature at the Department of English Language and Culture, University of Groningen (since 1994). She specializes in Old English, Middle English, Old Norse, and early Irish literature, with a focus on medieval textual analysis, cultural contacts, and conceptual blending in poetry. Her research explores themes such as kingship ideology, conflict metaphors, and the intersection of religion and imagination in early medieval texts.
Education and Professional History: Olsen holds a PhD and has taught at institutions like the University of Toronto. She has served in various administrative roles, including Chair of the MA Literary Studies Programme Committee and member of multiple admission boards and faculty councils.
Research Interests: Her work spans Anglo-Saxon riddles, Norse-Irish cultural connections, and the representation of supernatural elements in medieval literature. Key topics include the Exeter Book, hagiography, and the evolution of faerie traditions from the Middle Ages to the Enlightenment.
Publications: Her recent articles and books address topics like estrangement in riddles, warrior imagery in medieval poetry, and cross-cultural medieval identities. Notable works include Conceptualizing the Enemy in Early Northwest Europe (2016) and Airy Nothings (2014), co-edited with J.R. Veenstra.
