Karin Leijon serves as an Associate Professor of Political Science at Uppsala University's Department of Political Science, where she conducts research and teaching focused on European politics, judicial systems, and administrative policy. Her academic foundation includes a PhD in Political Science (2018), Master's Degree in Politics and International Studies (2012), and Bachelor's Degree in Political Science (2010), all from Uppsala University.
Leijon's research centers on judicial politics and European integration, with particular emphasis on how national courts interact with European legal frameworks through the preliminary ruling procedure. Her work examines whether courts function as supporters of European legal integration, protectors of national sovereignty, or as balancers of these competing demands. Recent research has expanded into Swedish welfare policy, specifically investigating administrative judicial review in elderly care systems.
Her publication record shows a clear progression from doctoral research on national courts in European integration to current collaborative projects examining courts' role in welfare services. The 2025 article 'Limiting bureaucratic discretion?' with Linda Moberg represents her newest work analyzing administrative judicial review in welfare sectors, while her 2024 publications continue exploring Swedish judges' behavior in EU legal contexts and municipal governance structures.
Leijon actively contributes to academic discourse through teaching courses at both bachelor's and master's levels including 'Governance and the State,' 'Method C' (covering research design and regression analysis), 'The Political System of the EU,' and 'Gender, Power and Institutions.' She previously served as Research Coordinator for The Swedish Network for European Studies in Political Science (SNES) from 2018-2020, demonstrating her commitment to advancing European studies in Sweden.
