Professor Karin Baur holds the professorship for pure mathematics at Ruhr University Bochum (since April 2024). She specializes in cluster algebras, combinatorics of surfaces, and algebraic structures, contributing to foundational research in pure mathematics. Previously, she served as a professor at the University of Leeds (2018–2024), the University of Graz (2011–2018), and held a SNSF professorship at ETH Zurich (2007–2011). Her academic journey includes a PhD from the University of Zurich (1997–2002) and postdoctoral work at UC San Diego and Leicester University.
Research Interests: Baur’s work focuses on cluster algebras, their geometric connections to surfaces, and representation theory. She explores abstract algebraic structures linked to geometric surfaces, emphasizing combinatorial questions and algebraic categorifications.
Advocacy & Leadership: Baur actively promotes gender equality in mathematics, organizing conferences like the European Women in Mathematics General Meeting (2022) and mentoring female researchers. She emphasizes empowering young scientists through coaching and recognition.
Affiliations: Member of the Faculty of Mathematics at RUB, part of the Research Team Baur, and involved in initiatives like the Floer Center of Geometry. She coordinates international conferences and collaborates on projects such as the SFB/TRR 191.
Education & Career: Holds a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Zurich (2002), with minors in philosophy and French. Her career includes roles at leading institutions globally, reflecting her dedication to advancing algebraic research and fostering academic communities.
