Karette Annie Stensæth is a Professor of Music Therapy and leader of the Center for Research in Music and Health (CREMAH) at the Norwegian Academy of Music. Her work focuses on music therapy applications in dementia care, children/youth in vulnerable situations, and philosophical frameworks rooted in Mikhail Bakhtin's theories. She leads national and international research projects including the Dementia Choir Oslo 24-26 initiative.
Education: Completed a PhD in Music Therapy (2008) at Norwegian Academy of Music under Prof. Even Ruud. Dissertation: Musical answerability: a theory on the relationship between music therapy improvisation and the phenomenon of action.
Research Interests: Music therapy methodologies, improvisation in clinical settings, Bakhtin's carnival theory applied to therapeutic dialogue, and interdisciplinary approaches to health through music. Her recent work emphasizes dementia care interventions and social inclusion for marginalized youth.
Grants & Projects: Secured funding for initiatives like HOMESIDE (2019-2024), RHYME (2010-2015), and Digi-Musikk-Ask (2021-). Current CREMAH projects include dementia choir programs and mental health advocacy lectures.
Awards: Received the Brainpower Prize (2023) for contributions to music therapy research.
Labs/Teams: Directs CREMAH, a multidisciplinary research hub exploring music's role in health. Collaborates internationally with institutions like Antioch University and Aalborg University.
