Karen Yan is an Assistant Professor in the School of Economics at Georgia Institute of Technology, where she joined in 2019. She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Texas A&M University (2019), complemented by an M.S. from Kansas State University, an M.A. from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and a B.S. from Shandong University of Technology.
Her research focuses on developing econometric methods for real-world applications, with primary interests in:
- Econometric theory including nonparametric estimation and inference methods
- Spatial econometrics and dynamic panel data modeling
- Causal inference techniques for treatment effect estimation
- Industrial organization applications using empirical approaches
- Policy impact evaluation in environmental and energy economics
Her recent publications (2018-2024) demonstrate a strong methodological focus on quantile regression, treatment effect estimation, and spatial modeling, with applications spanning environmental policy, energy economics, and program evaluation. Research consistently incorporates flexible functional forms and addresses identification challenges in observational data.
At Georgia Tech, she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses including Econometric Analysis (ECON-3161/6160) and Econometrics I (ECON-7022). She notes the institution's vibrant research environment and supportive colleagues as key aspects of her academic experience.
