Professor Karen Thorpe is an ARC Australian Laureate Fellow and Group Leader in Child Development, Education, and Care at the Queensland Brain Institute, University of Queensland. Her research focuses on the impact of early life experiences on lifelong trajectories, particularly in brain development and educational outcomes. She leads interdisciplinary teams conducting large-scale longitudinal studies, including evaluations of early childhood education policies and workforce strategies.
Thorpe has held leadership roles in major studies such as the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (UK), the E4Kids study, and data linkage projects with Queensland Government. She chairs the Australian Early Years Reference Council for Evidence for Learning and advises national bodies like Beyond Blue’s Be You initiative. Her work emphasizes translating research into policy and practice to improve child development and learning.
Notable awards include recognition as one of Australia’s 100 Women of Influence (2013, 2019) and the 2020 Advance Global Award for international contributions to education.
