Dr. Karen Shell is a Professor of Practice and Head of the Climate Science Program at the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS), Oregon State University. She is based in Burt Hall, Corvallis, Oregon. Her contact information includes an email at karen.shell@oregonstate.edu and a phone number 541-737-0980. Dr. Shell’s research focuses on climate dynamics and interactions between radiative transfer and atmospheric-ocean dynamics, contributing to climate modeling advancements.
Dr. Shell holds a PhD in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of California, San Diego (Scripps Institution of Oceanography), awarded in 2004, and a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Harvey Mudd College, completed in 1996.
Her research interests include climate dynamics, general circulation of the atmosphere, and interactions between radiative transfer and ocean-atmosphere dynamics. She also explores climate modeling, particularly focusing on climate feedback mechanisms, radiative forcing, and sea ice melt processes. Her work emphasizes understanding climate sensitivity and the impacts of anthropogenic warming.
In her academic role, Dr. Shell contributes to teaching and curriculum development in climate science, including the use of Jupyter Notebook for data analysis education. She leads the Climate Science Program, fostering interdisciplinary research and educational initiatives.
