Karen M. Scanlon

Dr. Karen M. Scanlon is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She leads a research program dedicated to understanding why infants suffer more severe infectious diseases and to developing host-directed therapies that can mitigate this vulnerability.

Research Focus
Dr. Scanlon integrates immunology, pulmonary biology, and microbiology to dissect age-dependent mechanisms of infection. Her laboratory employs infant mouse models of Bordetella pertussis infection to reveal unique pathophysiologic features such as leukocytosis and pulmonary hypertension, and to identify novel therapeutic targets against pediatric respiratory infections.

Current investigations explore immune ontogeny, pathogen-driven cardiac stress and remodeling, and the age-specific regulation of the pulmonary angiotensin system. These studies aim to uncover druggable host pathways that can be leveraged to reduce infant mortality and morbidity.
