Karen Kim, MD is the newly appointed dean of Penn State College of Medicine, effective September 1, 2023. She transitions from the University of Chicago, where she served as vice provost for research, Sara and Harold Lincoln Thompson Professor of Medicine, and founder/director of the Center for Asian Health Equity. Her leadership focuses on advancing health equity, interdisciplinary collaboration, and community outreach.

- MS in Neurobiology/Physiology, Northwestern University
- BA in Biology, Carleton College
Research Interests: Dr. Kim’s work centers on reducing health disparities through community-engaged strategies, cancer prevention, and addressing social determinants of health. She leads large-scale initiatives like pragmatic trials to improve colorectal cancer screening in underserved populations and has pioneered efforts to study Asian health disparities in the Midwest.
Awards & Recognition:
- Recipient of national awards for health equity advocacy, medical education, and mentorship
- Recognized for policy work and service on boards such as Cook County Health and Hospital System
Leadership & Governance: As dean, she oversees 1,400 faculty, 1,600 staff, and ~1,000 students across medical, PA, and graduate programs. She will co-chair the University Health Sciences Council and serve as physician-in-chief of the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
Labs & Initiatives: Founder of the Center for Asian Health Equity and leader of interdisciplinary research teams that secured $100M+ in grants. Her work integrates clinical, translational, and population health research.
