Karen Heimer is Professor of Sociology & Criminology at the University of Iowa, where she is also a Collegiate Fellow in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and a Distinguished Research Fellow at the Public Policy Center. She holds a courtesy appointment in the Boyd College of Law, reflecting her interdisciplinary engagement in socio-legal research.
Her research centers on gender and violence, juvenile delinquency, and criminal punishment, with a strong focus on gender and racial disparities in crime, victimization, and incarceration. She investigates the structural and social causes of crime and has led community-based research to reduce trauma and violence among youth. Her work bridges criminological theory with public policy applications.
Dr. Heimer's research has been supported by major grants from the National Institute of Justice and the National Science Foundation. She recently served as principal investigator on a community partnership grant to evaluate a school-based intervention aimed at reducing trauma and violent behaviors in an Iowa school district, demonstrating her commitment to applied and impactful scholarship.
