Dr Karen Finney is a Research Fellow within the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering at the University of Sheffield. She holds a BSc in Geography from the University of Southampton and completed her MSc (Eng) and PhD in Energy and Environmental Engineering at Sheffield. Her research focuses on low-carbon energy systems, including combustion science, carbon capture, and thermal process innovation.

Dr Finney conducts experimental and theoretical research at the UKCCSRC’s PACT facilities, collaborating with academic and industrial partners across projects like EPSRC SELECT and UKCCSRC BIO-CAP-UK. She has held leadership roles such as deputy technical director and work package leader.
Her scientific awards include the Thring Prize (2010), Foxwell Memorial Prize (2009), and recognition for contributions to energy research via grants like Horizon 2020 NANOMEMC2 and EPSRC UKCCSRC 2017. She is a Chartered Engineer and member of the Energy Institute.
