Karen Daniels is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Physics at North Carolina State University (NCSU), where she has been since 2005. Her research focuses on the non-equilibrium dynamics of granular materials, fluids, gels, and disordered metamaterials, with applications to geophysics, industrial processes, and climate change. She has held prestigious fellowships, including the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (2011–2012) and a Fulbright-Nehru Fellowship (2023). Daniels serves on the editorial board of Annual Reviews of Condensed Matter Physics and previously chaired the American Physical Society's Division of Soft Matter.
Education: PhD in Physics from Cornell University (2002), BA in Physics from Dartmouth College (1994).
Research Interests: The group explores failure mechanisms, pattern formation, and phase transitions in granular and soft matter systems. Recent work includes forecasting landslides using network science, studying interfacial tension in liquid metals, and analyzing granular rheology under varying boundary conditions. Experiments are often coupled with theoretical models to understand fundamental principles and real-world applications.
Awards: Multiple honors include AAAS and APS Fellowships, the NCSU Equity for Women Award (2015), and NSF CAREER Award (2007).
Advising & Grants: Daniels has mentored numerous students and postdocs, many of whom have pursued academic and industry roles. Her lab collaborates internationally, with recent projects involving the Max Planck Institute and the Indian Institute of Science. Current efforts include using satellite data for landslide prediction and investigating granular dynamics in microgravity.
